One hundred and fifty teachers and education advocates gathered at the WorkPlay Theater in Birmingham, AL for a discussion on how to ensure that all kids are receiving a great education. Moderated by Sacramento, CA Mayor Kevin Johnson, the wide-ranging conversation covered such topics as teacher evaluations, common core state standards, and school choice.
The event's location carried special significance. September 15th marked the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, one of the most notorious acts of racial terrorism of the Civil Rights Movement. The frank discussion of how our education system fails many students of color was a stark reminder of how much more we need to accomplish to fulfill the Movement's promise.
We had a lot of ground to cover in the 90 minute session and there were many questions that we didn't get to during the event. As promised, we have answered all your questions and they are now available here!
